Built this rig in 2006 with the help of you guys and one of my daughter's friends. It has been mothballed for a while but I have time to play again!! I was born in the 50's not computer illiterate but not very savey with them either. It plays BFBC2 choppy on medium, plays BF2142 pretty well on high settings. I want to be able to play BC2 until BF3 gets here.

I am looking for suggestions on how to spend my $$ for the best value or if I have to scrap it out and start over. I need to check my vid card for driver updates also (might help eh?)

Here's what I have:

Intel Pentium D 930 Presler 3.0GHz LGA 775 95W Dual-Core Processor BX80553930

Thermaltake CL-P0006 CPU Cooling Heatsink

APEVIA X-CRUISER-AL Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

PC Power and Cooling Silencer PPCS500 500W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power ...

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3300622AS 300GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive -Bare Drive

ASUS P5WD2 LGA 775 Intel 955X ATX Intel Motherboard

EVGA 256-P2-N517-AX GeForce 7800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card

Patriot Signature Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model PSD22G667K

and a couple of case fans and disc readers/ burners

Thanks ....

Getting a new system isn't all that bad in price these days. The only things that are expensive still are the power supply, operating system, and video card.

I like to look at this benchmark site to see what is the best bang for the buck:
[-link-]

If your old computer is still working, keep it as a backup. I have two setup myself. My old gaming rig is to surf and download crap and watch tv on with my tv tuner. My new gaming rig is obviously for games and some downloads.

I absolutely love my Gigabyte motherboard. They really give you a bunch of features and seem to use quality parts on their boards.

I've got an AMD 1090T cpu. It's going for only $179 now compared to the $300 I put down on it a year ago. It's a 6-core and has been great. But you can find some newer cpus that will offer bigger bang for bucks now. But this cpu is going to last me probably another 5 years.

You can get a WD 1.5Tb hard drive on newegg right now for only $55.

Memory is cheeeeaaaapppp! You can get 8Gig of G.Skill gaming memory for just over a hundred bucks.

You can use that benchmark site to find a video card as well. I'm still using an old ATi 4850 and it blows thru all the games at high settings. Unfortunately, it isn't DX11 or OpenGL 4.1 though. Ah well. Haven't got any games yet to take advantage of those. heh.

With a new video card and cpu, they're powerhogs these days. You'll want probably a minimum of 750watt power supply. Don't go cheap on the psu. If it goes kablooie, then the computer likely goes kablooie too.

Last I heard, Shorty was looking to upgrade his rig. You might talk with him on Teamspeak and see what he's been looking at :)

Great info as always, Fast. I'm considering a new build this summer, too. Gotta see how finances shake out since I'm unemployed now.

You might just have to upgrade your ram, OS and Video card depending on the requirements. You probably won't have to spend to much if that is the case.
