I have an EVGA 780i motherboard, an 8800 GTX card and an e6600 dual core. I was thinking up upgrading processor and graphics card, but keeping motherboard. I s it worth hanging on to the socket 775 motherboard, or has technology left my motherboard in the dust? |

If you don't mind me asking, what are you upgrading for? Battlefield? TF2? I was in the same boat about a month ago and I kept debating on whether or not I should upgrade and after thinking about it for a while, I came to the realization that there's really nothing out right now that worth it. However, if you absolutely feel the need to upgrade, I might recommend the Q8300 and just overclock it. It's one of cheapest quad cores for that socket. If you have to get in the $200+ bracket, I say it's not worth doing it. You might as well get a new mobo at that point. I'm a big stickler for graphics being maxed or at least on high so I can understand you wanting to upgrade, but as for my 2 cents, hold off a little longer till something good comes out. Also, you should have snagged you one of those 460's that were going for $175. That plus a cheap quadcore overclocked would easily get you max or at least high graphics. Heh heh. Yeah, there's not much right now to upgrade for. But then again, right now is a good time to upgrade. Prices are pretty damn good. Find out what the maximum cpu your bios is coded for before you choose.***If I'm reading their product cpu support page correctly, you can go up to a Q9650. http://www.evga.com/support/motherboard/nForce_Intel_CPU_List.pdf The Q9650 on newegg runs for $330. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130&cm_re=Q9650-_-19-115-130-_-Product Personally, for that kind of money, you could get a great new mobo and the AMD 1055T for the same price and get way better performance. Heh heh. But that's all up to you :) As for video cards, I'm still running my ATi 4850 1Gb at all max settings on all games. So far, the hardest thing to push it was BC2, and that's only because the driver wasn't optimized for that game. It's all good now though. I'm waiting for next actual series of cards to come out before I even consider upgrading. Oh yeah, as always, check this website for benchmarks of cpu and gpu's before you purchase one: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html Edited Sat Oct 02 2010, 12:22AM |

Series wrote ... I'd wait for octo-core. I assume you're joking, but in case you aren't, I can't see anyone spending $1000+ for technology that isn't even fully optimized for games yet? No thanks. i7-930 overclocked to 4Ghz on air is easily done for a fraction of the cost and get you relatively the same results. Edited Sat Oct 02 2010, 04:19PM |

Mooch wrote ... octo cores don't exist yet for consumers, I'm sure the server line will cost $1000+, but the desktop line won't. something that doesn't exist can't be optimized, it will get optimized. when quads came out, software was not optimized for them either. how could it get the same results? thats like saying a single and a dual core bench the same score. if your running software that isn't optimized for octo-core, but optimized for quad, then yeah, they will perform the same, then your comparing apples to oranges.
