Well, this thanksgiving holiday Champions- online is giving away four free days of play. So, I downloaded installed and have played for a few hours. It's a good time waster. I wouldn't buy it. But it seems to be a bit better than playing these little java games we've got. hehe. I made a beautiful nerd girl hero. The graphics are nice, okay-ish. Those of you who are into mmorpg's might want to give this a go. I don't think it's near as good as Warhammer Online was, but it does have better special effects. And the character generator is fun to play with too.

Get into the game here

Btw, you don't have to enter a key to play even though it brings up a enter key page. Just create a free account on the champions website. That's all.

Here's a pic of my first hero, my nerdy tech girl :

Two pics of another character I made in Champions. I tried to create the character Aliisza from Thomas M. Reid's Forgotten Realms books. Not too bad, imho :)

Final impressions: It's a good game. I enjoyed the character creator more than the game, I think. And it's what's going to be included in the Star Trek Online game. So, now I know that game is going to be pretty damn rocking. But Champions was quite good. At first, I didn't think it would be any better than Warhammer Online. But, it actually comes in about the same.

That said, I wouldn't pay a monthly fee for it unless it was like $5 or $10. Fifteen bucks is totally out of the question though. It's not bad. It just doesn't deserve to make that kind of money, imho. The graphics are pretty super, but the game is just like the other mmorpg's with their strict do this quests. That part is pretty boring to tell you the truth.

In any case, the price on the game itself has already fallen to just $20. I think that says a lot right there. But maybe that will encourage more people to play it. I saw actively 6 servers at one time (there may have been more, but they didn't show in the list and it was often less than 6). And the highst at one time, I saw the 6 servers carrying about 60 people a piece. That's not a bunch of players overall. So, hmm.

It deserves to survive. But it shouldn't ask for money to keep it going. They could have been far more successful by selling the game for $50 and then offering free monthly play. It'd still be selling like hotcakes...or just like Guild Wars did.
